The play is set in the small town of Tarnation at the Sunnyside Baptist Church in the near future on the “glorious” day when marriage equality is overturned, and it is deemed criminal for gay people to marry. The church folk revel into a sexual frenzy over their victory interrupted by a young lesbian couple insisting on a wedding at the church to validate their love. The opposition escalates until the couple barricade themselves into the chapel and a police raid ensues. Act I takes place in the foyer of the chapel as Faith decorates the church for Christmas. Pastor Aiden enters to tell her of the glorious news of marriage inequality, and their joy grows to orgiastic proportions. Naomi and Ruth enter with their friend Gustavo to declare their intention on marrying in the church. Faith and Pastor Aiden rebel and a battle occurs, forcing Naomi, Ruth, and Gustavo to barricade themselves into the chapel. The police are called and riot tactics are enforced. Act II takes place inside the chapel as Naomi and Ruth overcome fears of their probable incarceration and perform the marriage. Upon completion, they are interrupted, arrested, and forced to contemplate their possibly tragic fate.
